19.-22. Sept. 2024:   The International Meteor Conference (IMC) will take place in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic. More information will be given here as soon as it becomes available.

16. February 2024:

Good News from Sottogottardo! You remember: Last summer, a heavy thunderstorm destroyed the video station LOC completely. Meanwhile, Stefano buildt it up again! The station LOC is in operation and helps to localize the meteors again. Many thanks to Stefano! I'm sure, we will recognize this happy circumstance in the monthly meteor statistics...

October 2023:

Great success of Beat Booz! Within the framework of an ongoing National Fund project with the collaboration of the University of Bern and other scientists, Beat Booz was invited to analyze the camera recordings of bright meteors in Oman. As a project partner he is responsible for the calculation of the trajectory, the orbit and the dark flight of a meteoroid as well as the determination of a possible strewn field. Already the first search campaign led to success: Based on Beat's calculations, the first meteorite pieces were promptly found, which could be clearly assigned to the calculated fall! Bravo and congratulations. By the way: The found meteorite has already been examined and officially classified. It is called "Al-Khadhaf".

14. August 2023:

Remo Glaisen observed the activity of the Perseids and created an impressive summary report. Congratulations!

30./31. May 2022:

Confirmation of the outburst of the tau-Herculids (TAH): During the night of May 30/31, numerous meteors were recorded by FMA members. The radiant of 2/3 of these meteors was located at about RA 210° (14h) / DE 25°. Comparison: The official radiant of the TAH's is RA 228° (15.2h) / 40°, resulting in a distance of about 20°. It is very likely, that the observed meteors originated from a side arm of the tau-Herculids. The existence of this side arm was expected due to the partial fragmentation of comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann observed during its encounter with Earth in 1995.

15. Jan. 2022:

Outburst of volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai at 04.15 UT. The infrasound detectors of GNO, LOC, BOS, VTE and ENT recorded the arrival of the first pressure wave (coming via North pole) as well as the second wave group (coming from the South Pole).
See the recordings as pptx-file (animated) and as pdf-file.
Watch also the very interesting TV contribution about this volcano outburst.

13. Jan. 2022:

The Observatory Schafmatt (SCH) operates a radio receiver for meteor detection. The receiver is set to the frequency 143.050 MHz (modulation DSB, antenna type Discone 130) and detects the signals from the Graves transmitter (F-Dijon) reflected from aircraft, satellites and ionised air channels of meteors. The online waterfall diagram is actualized every 2 minutes.

17. Dec. 2021:

During the night of 24-25 of October 2021, a new long-period meteor shower has been discovered. For confirmation of this new stream, the working group FMA (we!) was asked for additional data. After checking of our data base and calculation of the orbital elements of the causing body by Beat Booz, we found two records, made by Stefano Sposetti (GNO) and Jochen Richert (BOS). The two recordings correspond very well to the new meteor stream, which was named according its radiant: It is called "October-zeta-Perseids (OZP)". Congratulations! Well done guys!
Please find the MeteorNews magazine, the separated article and the online version by Paul Roggemans about the successful cooperation between Global Meteor Network GMN, CAMS-BeNeLux and FMA.

09. May 2021:

Andreas Buchmann (ALT) captured a faint but nice meteor dropper. The video sequence shows clearly, that the (smaller) daughter piece is deccelerating much more rapidly than the mother piece.

13. Sept. 2020:

Martin Dubs published his practical script (Python) for the analysis of meteor spectra. Additionally, the corresponding description is available too.

17. June 2020:

Rare event: Late evening of June 17, some Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) occurred over the northern horizon. The high-altitude clouds reached up to 10° above horizon. Considering, that the clouds are located about 80 km above ground level, the distance to the clouds was about 400 km. Stefan Meister recorded the NLC's from Eglisau in direction north, between 22:50 and 23:02 MESZ. Enjoy the impressive pictures here.

13. July 2019:

From the end of June until about mid-August, Earth will pass through the Taurid Complex, a collection of rock and dust linked to an increased number of upper atmosphere incendiaries. A new model predicts that Earth will be closer to the heart of the swarm than it has been in almost 45 years, providing not only a treat for sky watchers but also an opportunity to investigate the mystery of where these objects come from and whether Earth might suffer a Taurid-related impact in the future.
After checking my radio recordings of the last 2 weeks, I believe to remark an increased meteor activity indeed. Please be alerted for the coming weeks.

26. Dez. 2017:

Not a Christmas Star: Between 03:36 and 03:44 UT, Roger Spinner (VTE) recorded a strange, bright shine ascending over the Eastern horizon (see video sequence). After some research, the source was found: Russia fired a TOPOL-Rocket (an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) into the sky. Further recordings can be found under 1,  2,  3.
Four days ago, on Dec. 22, the launch procedure of a Falcon 9 rocket produced a similar bright plume.

14. Nov. 2017:

In the early evening of November 14, 2017, at 17:47 CET, a bright fireball occurred in the greater Wiesbaden area (eyewitness reports). The fireball had a comparatively flat trajectory. For the cameras of the Swiss Meteor Network (FMA), the meteor was too low above the northern horizon, which is why there are unfortunately no records. The fireball was described as multicolored and it apparently disintegrated in several parts at the end of the trace.
The seismographs of the Seismological Service Wiesbaden recorded a strong signal two minutes after the sighting, which was probably triggered by a pressure wave (supersonic blast) of the meteoroid.
